1.5 Percent Of Chromes User Passwords Are Unsafe – A Google Report

Google has recently reported that 1.5 percent viz. over 316000 of the user passwords have been compromised already. It has also said that users are not aware at all about the significant risk their email accounts, government or financial accounts are put too due to the use of unsafe or reused passwords. As per the report, shopping websites is where the risk is the highest.

Google has also recently announced about its new Password checkup extension for google chrome. Here chrome users can check their password they use for logging. If the password is not compromised then you receive immediate warnings from google.
Just like shopping websites the risk with many other popular websites is around 2.5 times more due to the reuse of passwords making is vulnerable to hijacking even more and easily. The reason probably users making use of unsafe passwords is their ignorance to a great extent. There is not much awareness around the reuse of unsafe passwords more importantly for government and financial organizations.
Now, google in its report has not only informed about the threat around reuse of passwords but also provided a solution to it in a way. As mentioned earlier the password checkup extension is your answer where once you flag it, 26 percent of the unsafe passwords are reset by users. This feature also includes facilities like giving more control over data to the users with the option to opt out of unknown telemetry. Furthermore, in case if any issues crop up, the company can directly inbox the user.
Well, the cyber marketplace is expanding and becoming and integral part of the human kind but it comes with its share of vulnerabilities and threats. Being aware about the safety and security is becoming all the more important as India is rapidly digitizing and every critical data is online and accessible too if adequate care is not taken in terms of safety and Security. Googles Chrome Extension is a step in the direction. Have you checked it already?

Incredible Feat by IIT Madras by Creating Bio Friends Laser Carrots

In a one of its kind breakthrough by researchers or IIT Madras, they have brought to light the possibility of creating a biocompatible working lazer from a carrot with the help of an age old scientific process that was discovered by none other than the Physics nobel prize winner Sir C V Raman.  The best part is that the lazer that is created from carrots is bio friendly besides the fact that the system that is developed is also a reliable, robust one and has a linear temperature response that is good too.

This discovery has opened doors to advancement in the field of optical spectroscopy as well as sensing research in areas of science and industrial too.

Laser Creation
The lasers are created after the electrons in some special material become excited after absorbing energy from it. After they return to their original state, these electrons emit photons or particles of light. These photons are coherent in nature making the intensity of the light that is emitted sharp as well as powerful.

The world is now understanding the importance of going green and awareness around shifting towards creating sustainable materials for different applications including photonics is obvious.  The conventional polymers used are not only toxic but non-biodegradable hence the search for fluroscent polymers has been long on.

Laser or Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation is known to be one of the most notable discoveries of the 20th centures. They are known to have extraordinary properties like sharpness and directionality and are known to be a rich source of light. In the current research

As per Dr Sivarama Krishnan, there re organic bio pigments like carotenoids that are found in carrots as well as porhyrins that are found in chlorophyll are optically active interesting media.  The research team chose carotenoid naturally as the possible lasing source because even though the fluorescence quantum yield of carotenoids is very less than organic laser dyes, it’s is possible to obtain the vibrational spectra even if the concentrations of carotenoids is very low.

Second Ever Mysterious Signal Detected From The Deep Galaxy on Repeated Basis

In a second ever instance a mysterious signal is detected from far outside the galaxy by the Canadian Telescope. This telescope found the fast radio burst and detected around 13 radio bursts within three weeks of time span. As the Canadian hydrogen intensity mapping experiment (CHIME) which detected these signals was in its pre-commissioning stage, it was running only at the fraction of its fully capacity when it detected these bursts.

FAST RADIO BURSTS
Fast radio bursts, bright pulses of radio emissions seem to be originating from distant galaxies around 1.5 billion light years away and are only of milliseconds duration. Though there is no clarity around the source from where they originate but many believe that it’s from the extraterrestrials.

This CHIME observatory is located in the British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley and is equipped with four 100 m long, semi cylindrical antennas. These antennas are able enough to scan the entire northern skies on a daily basis.

The research has been published in the journal called Nature.  Shirish Tendulkar of the Mc Gill University of Canada said that they had discovered a second repeater and the properties of it had resemblance to that of the first repeater.

Lingrid Stairs an astrophysicist from University of British Columbia (UBC) said that it was coming to know about another sound only reaffirms the possibility that there could be more. This would further help us understand the cosmic puzzles, information around their causes as well as origin.

Though scientists have been able to detect only 60 FRBS they do believe that there could be as many as over a thousand FRBS in the sky every day. As far as the theories around their causes, they are many probabilities including the merge of two neutron stars or a single neutron star that is rotating at a high speed.

Everything You Need to Know About Gravitational Waves

For those who aren’t really aware of the gravity wave, let us primarily find out the definition of it. Whenever the two forces, namely buoyant force or the gravitational force try to re-establish equilibrium, gravity waves are generated in the interface of the two media or in the fluid medium. So, a gravity wave is said to occur when there is a displacement in equilibrium. In the Earths atmosphere, gravity waves are said to be responsible for transfer of momentum from the troposphere to the mesosphere and stratosphere. Now, scientists have been trying to hunt this gravity wave radiation for more than half a century.

1915 – In November this year, Einstein discovered a new way to look at gravity workings across the universe. This new view of gravity was called general relativity and it further predicted the existence of gravity waves or gravitational waves as known during those times. Einstein had already predicted then that movement of the masses caused gravitational radiations. He also mentioned the same in his papers that were published in 1916 and 1918 that the gravity waves would not travel in the similar pattern as the way light does, instead they would ripple like tremors or quakes in the space time.
There was a lot of debate on the existence of the gravity waves and many doubted their existence. But, the answer to this question came along when Joseph Weber of University of Maryland in College Park decided to build a detector for detection of gravity waves.

THE GRAVITY DETECTOR DEVICE
Weber create this gravity wave detector with the help of a large aluminum cylinder.  The solid bar of approximately equivalent to 50 gallon hot water tank usually used in homes. He then deployed sensors around the bar as he found out that when the waves would pass from there, the bar would definitely resonate like a bell. The sensors would help in capturing these waves by converting the shaking into electrical signals, further recording the same on a paper graph.

He also used two detected which very installed at two separate locations hundreds of kilometers away from each other.  But, it was the year 1969 when he announced to the public about recording a signal simultaneously on both the devices that he had installed in Maryland and Chicago. He further announced that the singals were said to be coming from the centre of the Milky way galaxy, from some supernova that went off or from neutron stars. This announcement was applauded while newspapers flashed with news of it as an extraordinary accomplishment.  Some some groups even build their own new detectors hastily but weren’t able to record anything at all. Later on many of the countries in the world create their own detectors, larger than that of Weber and modifications in the original design but with no results.

But, Weber was stern by his word that he had recorded waves until his death in 2000. Today physicists do suspect that Weber’s system had picked up some internal noises of the bars and not gravity waves.

Having said that, gravity waves were discovered many years after Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) detector was build in 1994. It was a super expensive project costing over 300 million but US Congress finally agreed to fund it after the supported convinced it. While the first one was build in 1994, the upgraded hardware was added from 2010 to 2015.  Once it was upgraded into a higher version it immediately detected gravity wave. Now, other detectors are also joining the LIGO quest as it is known to be a achievement that can be considered very much similar to that of Galileo’s first discovery of space through his telescope in 1609, but there is definitely more to come in form of picking up rumbles of the first nanosecond of creation, to name one.

Rajarajeswari College of Engineering, Bangalore. Department of Physics was started in the year 2006 have highly qualified faculty members with ample experience from Academics and Research.

Studying Computer Science and Engineering

A computer science degree can pay earn you a fortune but to crack it if not in flying colors, you have to pour your heart and soul into the course. So, how are you going to make it feel like a cake walk even though you are already aware that it is a pathway filled with pots and holes, bumps and more. Here are few tips to help you sail through your four rigorous years of computer science without hanging like a substandard computer on and off.:)

Plan ahead – Plan ahead – A computer engineering course is no cake walk. And like it is for other engineering degrees, following the methodology of studying a night or couple of nights before the examination is definitely going to sink your ship. So, plan well ahead of your exams and work backward if you may so that you are all ready when the exam dates are announced and can give your exams in a stress free manner.

Do not skip lectures – Many a students attend practicals but tend to skip their lectures. But, attending lectures is apparently a good idea because many a time the lecturers set papers and include topics that they have covered in the lectures. Also, you get to be in good books of your lecturer or professor and you can also resolve you queries and subject difficulties by seeking your professors help.

Be Practical -  As much important it is to have theoretical knowledge, it is equally important to have practical knowledge because taking up a job or your performance at a job is more about computer application than theory. Specializing in one particular area is a much better idea because you may take up a sub field of your choice and try to master it.

Upgrade. Upgrade. Upgrade – Yes, this holds true today with most of the careers but with computer science more so and it is about survival of the fittest. So, you need to be abreast with the new technology as a successful computer engineer. You might as well take up online courses or part time courses to keep yourself up to date.

Be a Team Player – You might like to work solo but when on a project at work a computer science student or at work as an employee you will have to work as a part of a team. Even as student you will be doing engineering projects with a partner or in a team. So, be ready to play the game as a team player and understand that team work can take you places as well.

Computer Science degree is a tough nut to crack but with a disciplined approach to study you can clear your examinations and graduate as a computer engineer.

Combination of Both Art & Science – Engineering Drawing

Engineering drawing is rather a combination of both art and science. To build any structure out of scrap requires conceptualization, ideation and implementation. The idea has to projected first on the sheet of paper before taking it further or implementing it in reality. Engineering drawing is the process which deals with projecting the idea or image in the mind to paper. It is a kind of technical drawing with complete specifications for engineered items. Engineering drawing may be about technical drawings but it is one of the toughest subjects, ask any engineering student and you will know. A sound knowledge of drawing is vital otherwise its a tough road ahead with the subject.
Engineering drawing is a beautiful blend of artistry and science that has the ability or power to process your dreams to products of reality. It is an art because it involves a lot of drawing, that to complex form of drawing. It is also a science because, art is free from boundaries or rules and regulations of any sort and is a purely putting down your imagination on paper, while science is bound by rules, regulations and restrictions. Here is a run down the sub categories under engineering drawing.
MACHINE DRAWING / MECHANICAL ENGINEERING DRAWING
Mechanical engineering drawing deals with machine drawing. It is apparently a drawing for representing machine lines or components while abiding to certain set of rules. All the details, both internal and external are provided by the machine drawing.
ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING DRAWING
Electrical engineering drawing involves assembly and working drawing of mechanical and electrical items, instruments and their parts.
CIVIL ENGINEERING DRAWING
Civil Engineering drawing is all about residential, commercial and industrial construction drawing.
DRAWING INSTRUMENTS
The drawing instruments for engineering drawing include a T-square or a drafter, stencils, drawing board and the regular pencil, rubber, sharpener things.

Well, it is interesting to know how beautifully art and science blend in together to give amazing shapes to your imagination and ideas by way of engineering drawing. Thus, besides being just a combination of science and art, engineering drawing remains to be one of the cornerstones of every engineering stream.
